How Technology is Helping More People Receive an Education

Educational technology is revolutionizing the way students learn right in front of our eyes. The most recent and obvious example of the rapid evolution and integration of technology and education happened with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic when schools pivoted from in-person to online learning nearly overnight. However, technology has played an increasingly important role in education since long before COVID-19 hit.

There are many benefits to the increased use of technology in education, including specialized learning, increased collaboration, engaging content, project-based learning, and improved productivity and efficiency. But, there’s one other very important benefit that technology makes possible: helping more people receive an education. Here’s how technology is having such a significant impact:

Accessibility. Many people are unable to receive an education because of their location. They may live in a remote town far from a school, or maybe they are an adult with a full-time job yet eager to better their education but don’t have the extra time to travel to the nearest school. The increased use of technology in teaching puts education within the grasp of such individuals. A computer and access to the internet changes their world completely.

Not only does technology provide access to education for more people overall, but it also enhances the accessibility for those already receiving an education. This is because there are more resources and “teachers” (such as guides, instructional videos, etc.) to instruct students even when a real teacher is not available. Students also have to worry less about finding textbooks for classes since many teachers scan their own books and create PDFs students can instantly access online.

Affordability. Another reason many people are unable to receive an education is because they don’t have enough money to pay for one. However, online classes can often be much cheaper than in-person schooling, making education more affordable to more individuals.

Affordability also ties in directly with some of the accessibility benefits of technology in education, like not having to pay for expensive textbooks, spending money on transportation to and from school, or purchasing extra stationery supplies. These costs pile up and are often too much to take on for individuals on a tight budget. However, the integration of technology with education has now made it more affordable and accessible for all students worldwide to receive an education.

At Tiyara, we believe education should be accessible and affordable for all. We provide educational opportunities that will make life-changing differences for under-resourced young women and men in India, equipping them to pursue professional and skilled employment. We recently ran a two-week campaign to buy one of our scholars a laptop that allowed her to complete her senior thesis and graduate in July. You can help make a difference by providing technology for other students or even putting a deserving young person through college by contributing to our cause today!
