Birta

MBBS

Two women wearing white medical coats standing outside in front of a multi-story building, with one making a peace sign.

Not only is Birta the first to go to college, but she is also in medical school, studying to become a doctor! What makes this even more amazing is that Birta comes from an unstable socioeconomic background. She belongs to the Karbi indigenous people group in the northeast Indian state of Assam. One of the Karbi traditions is stilt-walking, and they have a rich oral history of passing on folklore. Birta’s favorite Karbi food is pork cooked in bamboo leaves!

Birta’s Class of 2028

“My dream is to become a good skilled doctor who can serve, especially people from underprivileged communities like me.” says Birta “With my degree I hope I can provide affordable and free treatment and contribute to improving healthcare facilities.”

Birta has completed 2 years of medical school, but the expenses are becoming untenable for her parental family of 4, who live on a monthly income of $185. A Tiyara scholarship will enable Birta to fulfil her dream of becoming a doctor, and lifting up her community.
